The former member of our chair, Mirco Hünnefeld, is mentioned in the scientific background article of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton for their contributions to the development and application of artificial neural networks (ANNs). Their research links the fields of physics and artificial intelligence, leading to advances in both science and everyday applications.

The IceCube experiment at the South Pole is mentioned in the scientific background article of the Nobel Prize 2024 as an example of the use of ANNs in astroparticle physics. ANNs were used to create a neutrino image of the Milky Way. A former member of our chair, Mirco Hünnefeld, played a significant role in this project and is therefore indirectly mentioned in the scientific background article on page 9, which highlights the use of ANNs in astrophysics.

The work of Hopfield and Hinton has given us new tools to address complex scientific challenges. Projects like IceCube, where ANNs are helping to unlock the secrets of the universe, show the impact of these advances. We congratulate the winners and are proud that a former member of our chair has contributed to such significant advances.
